Kellogg is allowing customers in Stockholm, Sweden to purchase a box of their new Special K brand cereal by simply taking a picture with it and posting it to Instagram using their hashtag #nyaspecialk. #nyaspecialk is Swedish for  “new Special K.”

All shoppers need to do next is show the photo to the cashier and walk out with their free cereal. Simple. Easy. Effective.

In the States I am sure this type of promotion would use Twitter, but in Sweden Instagram is actually more popular than Twitter. These types of  “outside the box” social media marketing ideas always catch my interest. Coming up with new ways to promote your brand via social media is a great idea. Building a loyal following for your brand on social media is one of the most important things you can do for your company, and the best way to do that is to offer your followers something they can’t get anywhere else.

Studies show that consumers are 50-60% more likely to buy from a brand since becoming a follower on Facebook or Twitter. While other studies have shows 1 Facebook like to be worth $174.17

If you think social media is a waste of time for your company, it is time to rethink your logic and start thinking outside the box of traditional marketing methods which are quickly becoming ineffective to today’s consumers.
