Sometimes we need to work with sites that need to be accessible to screen readers. This can be tricky as screen readers have some fairly specific requirements that seem strange to those who do not use them. Even some of the most popular sites in the world are often not designed to be friendly to screen readers.
We have recently begun using a tool to help us detect issues. This tool is called: Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool (aka WAVE). You can see this tool in action at http://wave.webaim.org.
WAVE also has some very handy toolbars for the Firefox and Chrome browsers.
